The Fleetwood Lakes 40 Lakes
There is a long tradition among fell runners of celebrating their passing years on the hills, as well as in the pub! Bob Graham started it with his 42 peaks at 42. That idea has since been stretched to 50 at 50, 60 at 60 and even 70 at 70, courtesy of Joss Naylor. In 2005 John Fleetwood took up the theme at the other end by climbing 40 peaks at 40 with another alternative to the Bob Graham Round. In its 66 miles and 24,000 feet of climbing it coincides over a handful of peaks, otherwise, it wings its way round the Lakes in a more contrasting mixture of big and little fells. John completed it in 23 hours 45 minutes and, as some might guess, it was a spontaneous solo run without support!
The Lakes 40 may be completed at any age and in any direction starting from Troutbeck. Together with the BGR and Chris Upson's Lakes 24, the Lakes 40 creates a formidable trio of Lakeland 24-hour challenges. Nobody has completed all three yet but no doubt that is probably only a matter of time!
