This route has its origin in what were two popular challenge walks: the Saddleworth 5 Trigs and the Saddleworth New 5 Trigs.  Bob Tait, then leader of the Oldham Mountain Rescue Team devised the walks in 1971 and 1979 respectively. More recently the routes have become regular training runs for members of Saddleworth Runners. In April 2019 Chris Webb decided to combine the two routes into one long circuit, bagging all 10 trigs in an inaugural time of 6-17-54.  Overall it involves traversing some 36 miles and ascending 6,500 feet, including long stretches of the boggy and tussocky terrain for which these moors are renowned.
