  The Upper Calder 13 Trigs                          The South Pennines

This circuit of moorland trigs above the Upper Calder valley of the South Pennines presents a route of some 45 miles and 8000 feet.  It was devised by John 'Bod' Riley of Calder Valley Fell Runners and was first completed by Tony Wimbush (v60) as a solo self-supported run in 12-33 during October 2011.


Some notable shorter challenges in the area which can be used as preparation for the 13 Trigs and other ultras include - The Six Trigs Challenge, The Magnificent 7 and The Calder Valley Round (see below for route details).

Route

The object is to visit the 13 trig points listed below by starting and finishing at Mytholmroyd Community Centre GR 018 260.  Use OS Explorer Map OL 21 - South Pennines (1:25000).  A route sheet describing a suggested route between the trigs can be downloaded - see below.

  • The Six Trigs Challenge - originally published in TGO magazine in 1999 this was devised by Andrew Bibby of Todmorden Harriers. The 26 mile route starts from Hebden Bridge and includes the more northerly trigs of Boulsworth Hill and Alcomden Stones. 

  • The Magnificent 7 - An extension of the Six Trigs Challenge starting from Heptonstall devised by some local CVFR members as an annual run. Standing Stone Hill trig on Heptonstall Moor is added en-route to Bridestones.  Approximately 28 miles of arduous terrain.

  • The Calder Valley Round -  originally devised in 1989 by Tony Wimbush this was re-launched in 2010 as a training run cum challenge to mark it's 21st anniversary. At 16 miles and 4000' it provides an ideal training route for longer excursions in the area. The original route inspired an annual event popular with runners called 'The Hebden 22'.
